The Johnson Steel Street Rail Company was organized in 1883 by Tom Loftin Johnson (1854-1911) with the backing of Alfred Victor and Antoine Bidermann du Pont to manufacture the improved street-car rail which Johnson had invented the year before. The firm was renamed The Johnson Company on January 1, 1889, and constructed a fabricating works in Johnstown, Pa.
